About Ali Mardan
Ali Mardan was a pioneering Sorani folk vocalist active from the 1930s through the 1970s. His recordings, made on early radio and primitive studio equipment, are some of the oldest surviving documentation of Sorani repertoire. He worked alongside Iraqi maqam masters and helped formalize Kurdish folk's relationship to Arabic modal traditions.
