No other entertainer has shaped modern pop music the way Michael Jackson did. He was a child star with the Jackson 5, then made Thriller, the best-selling album in history, and turned dance, music video and live performance into one art form. His life was also marked by serious controversy and ended suddenly in 2009. In 2026, a film about his life became the highest-grossing biopic ever made, and a new generation is discovering his songs.
This Michael Jackson biography tells his story plainly: the music, the milestones, his death, and the allegations that followed him. At the end we look at what a Kurdish music reader can take from him and where to start listening.

Early life in Gary, Indiana
Michael was the eighth of ten children of Joseph and Katherine Jackson, a working-class family in the industrial town of Gary, Indiana. Joseph, a steelworker and former guitarist, organised his sons into a band. Michael joined as a small child and soon became its lead singer and focal point.
As an adult, Michael spoke publicly about his father's strict and at times harsh discipline during the rehearsals of those years. He used those memories to explain his uneasy relationship with fame and with his own childhood.
Career: from the Jackson 5 to the King of Pop
The Jackson 5 (1960s to 1970s)
The Jackson 5 signed with Motown in 1968. Their first Motown singles, including "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There", were big hits, and the ten-year-old lead singer became a star. Michael also released solo records at Motown, including "Ben". The brothers later left the label and continued as The Jacksons.
Off the Wall (1979)
Michael's first adult solo album, Off the Wall, was produced by Quincy Jones. With songs such as "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You", it mixed disco, funk and soul and showed him as a mature artist.
Thriller (1982) and the moonwalk
Thriller was released on 29 November 1982, again with Quincy Jones. "Billie Jean", "Beat It", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" and the title track all became classics. The album is estimated to have sold around 70 million copies, and it is widely cited as the best-selling album of all time. At the 1984 Grammy Awards, Jackson won eight awards from twelve nominations.
On 16 May 1983, on the TV special Motown 25, he performed "Billie Jean" and did the moonwalk on television for the first time. The long Thriller music video, directed by John Landis, helped make music video an art form in its own right.
Bad, Dangerous and HIStory
Bad (31 August 1987), the last of his albums with Quincy Jones, brought hits such as "Man in the Mirror", "Smooth Criminal" and "The Way You Make Me Feel". Dangerous (1991) moved towards new jack swing and included "Black or White", "Remember the Time" and "Heal the World". HIStory (1995) was a double album with a greatest hits disc and new songs such as "Earth Song" and "They Don't Care About Us". Invincible (2001) was the last studio album released in his lifetime.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once with the Jackson 5 and once as a solo artist.
Allegations and trials
In 1993 Jackson was accused of child sexual abuse. The civil case was settled out of court in 1994, and no criminal charges were filed. In 2005 he was tried on other child sexual abuse charges and acquitted on all counts by a jury. After his death, the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland presented further allegations by two men, which his estate denies. These accusations remain part of any honest account of his life, and opinions about them are still sharply divided.
Personal life
Jackson was married to Lisa Marie Presley from 1994 to 1996, and to Debbie Rowe from 1996 to 2000. He had three children: Prince, Paris and Prince Michael II. His changing appearance drew enormous media attention. He said he had the skin condition vitiligo, which his autopsy later confirmed.
How Michael Jackson died
In 2009 Jackson was rehearsing for This Is It, a series of comeback concerts in London. On 25 June 2009, he died at his home in Los Angeles of cardiac arrest caused by acute propofol intoxication. Propofol is a surgical anaesthetic that his personal physician, Conrad Murray, had been giving him as a sleep aid. In November 2011 a Los Angeles jury convicted Murray of involuntary manslaughter, and he was sentenced to four years in prison. His death caused unprecedented surges in internet traffic and a sudden spike in sales of his music.
The 2026 film "Michael"
The biopic Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, was released on 24 April 2026. Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson plays the adult Michael in his acting debut, with Colman Domingo and Nia Long as his parents. The story runs from the Jackson 5 years to the late 1980s and the Bad world tour. It grossed more than 1 billion dollars worldwide, making it the highest-grossing biographical film ever.
Reviews were mixed. Critics praised Jaafar Jackson's performance but many found the film sanitised. According to Wikipedia, references to the 1993 allegations were removed after the filmmakers learned of a legal settlement clause, and the reshot ending stops before the allegations begin. A sequel was announced in May 2026.

Michael Jackson's legacy
Jackson's influence goes far beyond sales figures. He showed that a pop song could be a total performance: voice, rhythm, dance, costume and film at once. His vocal style, with its hiccups, gasps and sharp rhythmic attacks, and his dance moves have been copied by countless performers around the world.
His career also raises a question that we explore in our essay on the artist and the performer: what do we owe to the art when the life behind it is contested? Many listeners separate the two. Others cannot. A biography can only set out the facts, including the acquittal and the settlement, and let readers decide.
He is also a case study for our article on why today's songs fade fast. Four decades on, "Billie Jean" is still played at weddings, parties and gyms across the world.
The Kurdish connection
We found no documented direct link between Michael Jackson and Kurdish music, and we will not invent one. What we can say is based on data:
- Sorani readers look him up. In our research, Michael Jackson's Sorani Wikipedia article drew around 40 views a month, among the highest of any foreign pop star. The most common Sorani autocomplete search about him concerns his death (مردنی), which is why we explain it carefully above.
- Global pop reached Kurdistan too. His rise was part of the globalisation of popular music, when American pop spread to almost every country through television and cassettes. Readers interested in that process can explore the Kurdish book Music and Globalisation and Famous Musicians of the World in our library, along with A Short History of World Music.
- A different road. Jackson grew up inside a commercial music industry. Kurdish music often survived without one, carried by singers under bans and in exile, as our guide to famous Kurdish singers shows. Comparing the two is a good way to see how much the business around a musician shapes what survives.
Where to start listening to Michael Jackson
- ***Thriller*, the full album.** Start with "Billie Jean" and "Beat It".
- ***Off the Wall*.** "Rock with You" shows his smoother, warmer side.
- The Jackson 5: "I Want You Back". Hear how complete his voice was at ten years old.
- ***Bad*.** "Man in the Mirror" for the message, "Smooth Criminal" for the dance.
- The Motown 25 performance of "Billie Jean" (1983). Watch rather than listen. This is where the moonwalk was born on television.
If you have seen the 2026 film, go back to the original performances. They show the real rhythm and precision that no actor can fully copy.
